<image:caption>In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss talking goats, barking boyfriends, and fish balls, as well as the actual contents of The Message in the Hollow Oak (1972)! Note: In this 1972 book, the characters are on an archeological dig, spending most of the time at the dig exhuming indigenous bodies and their artifacts, and not being, shall we say, culturally sensitive in any way, shape, or form. We don’t talk about it the entire episode, but it is the setting of the book, so it does get discussed. If that’s not your cup of tea, obviously feel free to skip this episode. <image:caption>In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss fishmongers, The Gift of the Magi, and twin criminals (twiminals?), as well as the actual contents of The Clue in the Broken Locket (1965)! Note: In this episode, the child abuse that takes place in this book is discussed, though not in great detail. If you’d like to skip those parts, we recommend skipping over the following timestamps: a brief mention at 0:05:13, and discussion from 0:11:48-0:13:00 and 1:15:56-1:16:59. Take care of yourselves, and if you’d like to read a middle grade book that does contain child abuse but also features the protagonists getting into a healthy foster care situation and learning how to deal with their trauma, Colleen recommends Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, which won the 2021 Newbery Honor Award, and which Colleen specifically thinks is one of the best depictions of this topic in children’s literature (though definitely check the content warnings ahead of time if needed because there are a lot). <image:caption>Despite Episode 010 being nearly double the length of previous episodes, we still cut SO much out, so we wanted to release our extended outtakes episode in the main feed this time, to entertain and amuse you all with our goofs, gaffs, and MANY sidebars and tangents that simply had to be cut for time. There ARE swear words in this one, which is why this episode will be marked “explicit,” and (due to mentions of the royal family’s relationships starting in the year 1096) there is also a brief mentions of incest. Because of The Past. So if you usually listen to our episodes with younger listeners, this one is not the episode for that. If you enjoy the absolute nonsense contained within this extended section of outtakes, please consider going to our Patreon at patreon.com/nancydrew and pledging one dollar a month, which unlocks access to an episode of our bloopers and outtakes (usually around ten minutes, rather than around thirty) for every episode we release—that’s about 20 extra minutes a month of goofs and gaffs for just $1! <image:title>Episodes - MaYaND 010: CB 10: The Password to Larkspur Lane - Me and You and Nancy Drew Episode 010-Classic Book Episode 10: The Password to Larkspur Lane (1966) by Carolyn Keene!</image:title>
<image:caption>In this episode (which we are re-releasing since Spotify didn’t jive with our RSS feed for the initial release, for some reason), Meghan and Colleen discuss silverware-themed phone greetings, hot milk errands, and how to swan dive well enough to become a camp counselor, as well as the actual contents of The Password to Larkspur Lane (1966)! Correction: In this episode, Colleen confidently states that “con man” is short for “confidence man.” That part is true, but Colleen got the reason for this name wrong; rather than the scammer being so confident, as Colleen says in this episode, it’s because the original 1840s con men would decide on a wealthy mark to scam, pretend that they knew that person, have a conversation with them for a while as if they were old friends, then ask their “old friend” if they had the confidence to, say, lend their watch to the scammer. The con man would then take the watch and never return. To see visuals of the images discussed in this (or any) episode, go to patreon.com/nancydrew (images are not behind a paywall)! <image:caption>In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss hot chocolate, famous toes, and chicken wire, as well as the actual contents of Nancy’s Mysterious Letter (1968)! Correction: It appears that crush-to-activate smelling salts are…still how smelling salts are stored and used medically, even if the packaging itself has been updated through the years. Wild! Notes: As a palate cleanser for the outdated terminology that this 1968 book uses to describe sailors being abducted, we recommend the fun middle grade novel Kaya of the Ocean by Gloria L. Huang for a great fantasy read featuring a protagonist who lives in Hawaii, encounters a bunch of mysterious happenstances, and suddenly discovers she has magical powers since she is the descendent of Chinese water goddess Mazu. <image:caption>In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss the invention of the can opener, wooden-track roller coasters, and the Swedish Chef…as well as the actual contents of The Clue in the Diary (1962)! Notes: There are a few moments where the audio cuts out for a second or two and we couldn’t figure out why, but hopefully they’re not TOO distracting. Also, as a palate cleanser for the ableist language this 1962 book uses to describe Nancy’s volunteer work at the “crippled children’s home,” we recommend the amazing middle grade novel The Odds by Lindsay Puckett for a great fantasy read featuring a protagonist who balances her chronic pain, fifty-three magical grandparents, and, of course, figuring out how to deal with a soul-sucking ghoul. Also, please, we beg you to watch, or at least read more about, or at least look at the pictures of the Swedish Fish sitcom mentioned in the Gumshoe Game Show (this isn’t a spoiler—the question isn’t even about the sitcom; Colleen just needed everyone to know): https://www.alexischampa.com/swedish-fish- To see visuals of the images discussed in this (or any) episode, go to patreon.com/nancydrew (images are not behind a paywall)! <image:caption>In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss wishing wells, elevator laws, and pumping gas in New Jersey…as well as the actual contents of The Secret of Red Gate Farm (1961)! Corrections: When we said “poisonous,” we actually meant “venomous.” Our bad! Also, we erroneously said that Nancy got peas as a midday snack from the drugstore in a previous book. That’s totally false; she got a normal snack (split pea soup) from the drugstore. Notes: CW for discussion of Orientalism and the KKK (as both are large parts of this book, including the book referring to Asian people as “Oriental”). As a palate cleanser, we’d like to suggest the middle grade novel Rainbow Fair by Diana Ma, which features a Chinese-American Muslim girl and is a light, joyful read about intersectional identities. Or, for a less light but still joyful read, we also recommend the book Notre Dame vs. The Klan by Todd Tucker, about one of the reasons why Notre Dame are known as the Fighting Irish (hint: it’s for physically fighting the KKK out of South Bend, Indiana—sometimes using actual potatoes as tools). Finally, Colleen would like to clarify that their phrasing around Nancy possibly being aromantic sounds different than how they intended it; their intention was not to imply that aromanticism does not fall under the queer umbrella (it does!), but simply to imply that Nancy not expressing interest in Carl Junior in this novel might not imply that Nancy is only into women, as it could instead imply that she is on the aro/ace spectrum and isn’t into anyone! <image:caption>In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss Anne Hathaway, horse girls, and getting your boyfriend confused with your father while knitting them a gift…as well as the actual contents of The Secret of Shadow Ranch (1965)! Notes: Colleen would like to apologize for their voice sounding rough due to a cold; Episode 6 will sound better! Also, to balance out this book’s appropriation of indigenous culture and dress, we’d like to recommend The Brave by James Bird, a great middle-grade novel that tackles such topics as OCD, indigenous heritage, and death, while also being incredibly well-written and downright hilarious at times. Also, Colleen would like it to be known that when George Fayne was first mentioned and described, Colleen’s partner burst out into a spontaneous rendition of Chappell Roan’s “The Giver.” To see visuals of the images discussed in this (or any) episode, go to patreon.com/nancydrew (images are not behind a paywall)! <image:title>Episodes - MaYaND 002: CB 02: The Hidden Staircase - Me and You and Nancy Drew Episode 002-Classic Book Episode 02: The Hidden Staircase (1959) by Carolyn Keene!</image:title>
<image:caption>In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss avian husbandry, unflavored gelatin, Canadian rivers, and the singular form of “mayonnaise”…as well as the actual contents of The Hidden Staircase! For a transcript of this (or any) episode, please visit meandyouandnancydrew.com/transcripts Other episode notes: Though we did not go into it in Blast From The Past or any other segment, we’d like to point out that we do not romanticize “Colonial-Era America” as a flawless time in the past (due, if it’s not clear, to the colonialism, slavery, and other huge issues). Also, for more reading on the word the characters use in this book to mean “shafted” or “cheated” and the word’s history and impact, we recommend this awesome article from NPR: https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/12/30/242429836/why-being-gypped-hurts-the-roma-more-than-it-hurts-you</image:caption>

<image:title>Episodes - MaYaND 001: CB 01: The Secret of the Old Clock - Me and You and Nancy Drew Episode 001-Classic Book Episode 01: The Secret of the Old Clock (1959) by Carolyn Keene!</image:title>
<image:caption>In this first episode, Meghan and Colleen introduce themselves and the show concept and, throughout the course of the episode, discuss burnt flour, circular family trees, therapy dogs for horses, soggy upholstery, and Chevy Chase…as well as the actual contents of The Secret of the Old Clock. Show Notes: As mentioned in the episode, we recommend reading the middle grade novels Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling and/or Front Desk by Kelly Yang for some positive representation of awesome female protagonists (and just a bit of mystery)!
