Notes: As a palate cleanser for the outdated terminology that this 1968 book uses to describe sailors being abducted, we recommend the fun middle grade novel Kaya of the Ocean by Gloria L. Huang for a great fantasy read featuring a protagonist who lives in Hawaii, encounters a bunch of mysterious happenstances, and suddenly discovers she has magical powers since she is the descendent of Chinese water goddess Mazu.
